The Outsiders gallery opened another intriguing show last night in its London based space. Entitled Anoint, the exhibition features a group of artists selected by Steve Lazarides, because of their diverse oil painting practices. Anointment of art was made by Adam Batchelor, Antoine Correia, Cyclops, Bill Dunlap, Billy Norrby and Margherita Marzotto, an international roster bringing series of individual and thought provoking works to light. Title of this group exhibition alludes to the chosen as well as to the traditional mark-making method using oil in religious and other purposes.
Anoint opened on the evening of May 8 and it will run through June 7, 2014 at the Outsiders London.
Adam Batchelor is a British artist based in Norfolk who devotes his creativity to illustrative representations. His mastery of drawing is visible throughout the elaborate works filled with evocations, often containing a slight and witty political connotation. Artwork he produces currently is largely dealing with the issues of man’s relationship with the natural world, and the complicated relationship between the modern society and the nature.
Antoine Correia is a French artist known for his naturalistic pictures of human bodies, animals and landscapes. His works contain both contemplative and sensual aspects, detaching themselves from the generally accepted aesthetic norms, taking the viewer’s own perceptions to a new level. Correia has been an active member of the global art community, showcasing his pieces around the globe for the past couple of decades.
For Cyclops, this will be the second exhibition at the Outsiders gallery, after his solo inaugural show in 2013. He belongs to the acclaimed British street art scene, and besides his work Cyclops is famous for getting arrested during the shooting of the acclaimed Banksy’s film Exit Through the Gift Shop. His artwork was exhibited at Tate Modern among other spaces, and the Outsiders will feature pieces from the new The Way of All Flesh series.
Bill Dunlap comes from the US as an established artist, having been featured on TV, radio, in publications and art books. As an illustrator, Dunlap had his work published in many magazines and newspapers across the country, while several prominent contemporary art collections treasure his pieces, such as the library collection of the New York MoMA and the collections of the Universities of Wisconsin and Maryland.
Billy Norrby is a painter living and working in New York, whose career first took the path through the world of video games. Once he realized he wishes to pursue the arts, he started creating explicit, imaginative artwork, later promoted in many galleries and shows, including Spectrum, 3×3 and the Society of Illustrators.
Margerita Marzotto is the only woman among the exhibiting artists, whose artistic career is on the rise. Her figurative compositions portray female characters in their most intimate routines and moments of the day. This will be her first presentation at the Outsiders gallery, where Marzotto will explore the impact of costume of female inhibition. Her work stands in support for sexuality liberation, while her females depicted in the series are dressed in an 18th century undergarment outfits while sitting on the toilet.
The Outsiders is known to always put on extraordinary exhibitions, and Anoint will definitely be one of those excellent ones.
