Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography by Roland Barthes
Camera Lucida is a short book published in 1980 by the French literary theorist and philosopher Roland Barthes. Thirty years on, John Berger’s book Way of Seeing is still an important primary textbook, not just for the ones studying or interested in fine art, but in any of the humanities from literature to cinema. The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Walter Benjamin
The essay by Walter Benjamin, published in 1936, has been influential across humanities, especially in the fields of cultural studies, media theory, architectural theory, and art history. The essay deals with the questions concerning the value and nature of art in juxtaposition to an industrial, materialistic, and modernizing world. In it, Benjamin discusses the concept of authenticity, particularly in application to reproduction. Analyzing the shift and the changes in society’s values over time, Benjamin goes on to describe the alteration in taste and style in art history. The essay was first of all written for a small circle of academics to position art in the sphere of mass media, but over the years it became one of the most influential writings in art history, that helped to influence and shape ideas and thoughts of some of the most influential thinkers today.
