The notions of motion, rhythm, musicality and dynamism have always been present in the work of the British artist Mode 2. Revolving around these ideas, Mode 2 art exhibition entitled Preludes… featuring his new body of work will be on view at Galerie Openspace. Regarded as a pioneer of post-New York graffiti and hip-hop culture, the artist will be showcasing 25 new artworks on canvas and paper that explore the universality of music. Following this concept, the opening of the exhibition will resemble a theater play or a show on stage and different styles will dialogue along the exhibition rooms of the gallery like a music score in four parts. The fourth room of the gallery will be dedicated to body sensuality with the showcase of the artist’s erotic work for the very first time in France.
Graffiti and Music
Focusing on the universality of music through motion, dancing, writing and visual composition, Mode 2 has conceived this new body of work as an intense feeling translated into painting. The exhibition suggests a growing excitement brought by that moment that comes before and anticipates the future such as the preface of a book one is really looking forward to reading, hints of a promising artistic style about to blossom, first notes of a music track, or first moves of a dancer entering the stage. Drawing on the energy and inventiveness of hip-hop in order to explore his own limits, the artist oscillates between topics, compositions, colors and lines. As the artist explains, the body language of the graffiti writer is captured by the lines, and its flow creates the link between music, dance and image that is at the foundation of hip hop.
The Practice of Mode 2
While hanging out in Covent Garden starting 1984, Mode 2 became a witness of hip-hop as a new culture emerging that inspired him to start doing graffiti. He became known for the fluidity of his lines and the virtuosity of his style that quickly promoted him as one of the greatest masters of the European graffiti scene. For his drawing and painting virtuosity and defense of the hip-hop culture, the artist served as a great source of admiration for his peers. His originality and influence on the international art scene have turned him into a reference in art history, as he continues to follow his own path and tackle topics that are dear to him.
