Signed upper right 'Klee', inscribed by the artist across lower edge of mount '1922 x 93 Kontakt zweier Musiker' , in pencil lower left corner of mount 'Sond. C.. (Sonder Classe was Klee's designation for works he considered to be particularly successful, and these were generally not for sale) and on the reverse of mount 'Samig K Privatbesitz' (possibly referring to the artist's own collection)
Probably remained in the artist's collection until his death in 1940; Acquired with the Estate of Karl Nierendorf, 1948
