A whole bunch of art auctions are expecting us next week. The collectors and lovers of photography will be pleased with upcoming art auctions, as there are a lot – a lot! – of photography-themed auctions. Some priciest photographs could even break a million dollars barrier, if there’s enough interest. So, let’s see which six art auctions we have decided to bring to you, so you could get a closer look. First, there are two on the last day of March – one is Art Contemporain at Cornette de Saint Cyr in Paris, and another one is in New York, at Christie’s: 20/21 Photographs. Then, on April 1, there are three art auctions. First one is Art Contemporain at Millon & Associes auction house in Paris; then, one afer another at Artcurial (also in Paris), there are Post War & Contemporary Art auction and Post War & Contemporary Art: The Jean Ferrero Collection. Finally, at Sotheby’s in New York, there is another auction of photographs, called simply – Photographs. And then, on April 1 and April 2, yet another auction of photographs is about to happen, at Phillips in New York. Evening sale is sheduled on April 1 at 6 PM, and day sale is on April 2 at 10 AM.

20/21 Photographs at Christie's

We’ll start at Christie’s in New York (20 Rockefeller Plaza), where will be held 20/21 Photographs auctions, and here you’ll find works made by some famous artists for fairly reasonable prices. Auction is set at 2 PM on March 31. The priciest lot of those we selected is Elger Esser’s Saint-Valery-en-Caux, France from 2009 (Lot 208), which is estimated at $30,000 – $50,000. Then there are two works that are estimated at $20,000 – $30,000: Rineke Dijkstra’s Kora, Tiergarten, Berlin, Germany, July 1, 2000 (Lot 309), and Helmut Newton’s Jassara, Rue Aubriot, Paris 1977 (Lot 278). Chuck Close’s Kate Moss from 2005 (Lot 280) should be sold at the range of $15,000 – $25,000, and Sally Mann’s Untitled, from ‘Deep South’, from 1996 (Lot 211) is estimated at $10,000 – $15,000, as well as Helmut Newton’s Kiss from Bordighera Details, from 1982 (Lot 275) and another work by Rineke Dijkstra – De Panne, Belgium, August 7, 1992 (Lot 311). Several works are estimated at $8,000 – $12,000 – Nan Goldin’s Patrick Fox and Teri Toye on their wedding night, NYC, 1987 (Lot 263), Edward Burtynsky’s Shipbreaking #26, Chittagong, Bangladesh, from 2001 and Todd Hido’s Untitled #4684 from 2005 (Lot 204). At the end, lots that shouldn’t cross the $10,000 border are Sebastião Salgado’s Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe from 2008 (Lot 210) (estimated at $5,000 – $7,000), and another work by Rineke Dijkstra, Hilton Head Island, SC, USA, June 1992 (Lot 312), which should change owners for $4,000 – $6,000.

Art Contemporain at Cornette De Saint Cyr

On Tuesday, March 31, at 2:30 Art Contemporain auction will take at Cornette De Saint Cyr (6 avenue Hoche 75008 Paris, France). At this art auction there is a various range of contemporary art, with similarly big range of prices – up to $80,000, but there are also several lots that you could probably get for a few hundred dollars. The highest estimated lot at Art Contemporain at Cornette De Saint Cyr is Manolo Valdés’ Profil from 2009 (Lot 253), that should be sold for $59,741 – $81,465. Mark Tobey’s Bleu-noir from 1969 (Lot 217) is estimated at $43,448 – $65,172, and Keith Haring’s Sans titre from 1985 (Lot 321) and Robert Longo’s Love will tear us apart from 1983 (Lot 275) are both estimated at $32,586 – $54,310. Hans Hartung’s T1981-h47 from 1981 (Lot 218) also has the same low estimate, but the high estimate is lower than the previous two lots: $32,586 – $43,448. Fernandez Arman’s Tranches de vie from 1994 (Lot 255) is estimated at $27,155 – $38,017, another Keith Haring’s work, Radiant baby, from 1982 (Lot 325) should change hands for $23,896 – $30,413, and than there are two works by JonOne are estimated at $16,293 – $21,724 – Everlasting 3 el 3 from 2012 (Lot 328) and Lettin my heart talk from 2012 (Lot 330). Gerhard Richter’s Sans titre (person group), from 2008 (Lot 278) should be sold at the same range as JonOne’s aforementioned works, and Bert Stern’s Marilyn with pearls fr60 2012 (Lot 289) is estimated at $13,034 – $19,551.

Post War & Art Contemporain At Millon & Associes

On April 1, at Millon & Associes auction house in Paris (19, rue de la Grange Batelière, 75009 Paris, France), an auction of works by some big names of Post War and Contemporary Art will take place at 2 PM. This is also an art auction that is offering huge price range and it can be said that at Millon & Associes auction house on Wednesday you could find art pieces suitable for anyone’s pocket. Of course, lots like Fernandez Arman’s Colère de contrebasse from 1972 (Lot 142) or Colère de violoncelle calciné from 1968 (Lot 141), that are both estimated $76,034 – $86,896 are not amongst them. 🙂 But, Hans Hartung’s Élegie Des Alizées from 1978 (Lot 14), estimated at $325 – $434 – is. Between those prices, you could find another Fernandez Arman’s work, La mort de Justine, from 1975 (Lot 143), estimated at $27,155 – $38,017. Then, there are several works that should be sold between $16,293 and $21,724: Erró’s 27 Faces from 2011 (Lot 114), Andy Warhol’s Fish from 1983 (Lot 113), and two works by Lin FengmianEnvolée d’oies sauvages (Lot 2) and L’oie et le pêcheur (Lot 1). Another work by Erró, Swiss Factory from 1962 (Lot 116), is estimated at $10,862 – $16,293, and Andy Warhol’s Marilyn (Announcement) from 1981 (Lot 111) could reach $10,000 ($8,689 – $10,862). Keith Haring’s Sans titre from 1987 (Lot 110) also could reach five-figures ($7,603 – $9,775), while Roy Lichtenstein’s As I Opened Fire from 1966 (Lot 108) ($4,344 – $6,517) and Victor Vasarely’s Tridim-Gordes from 1970 (Lot 91) ($2,172 – $3,258) should be somewhat more affordable.

Post War & Contemporary Art Auctions At Artcurial (S.V.V.)

At Artcurial (S.V.V.) (7, Rond-Point des Champs-Elysées, 75008 Paris, France), two Post War & Contemporary Art auctions will be held on Wednesday – one after another, at 11 AM and 3 PM. The name of the second auction is Post War & Contemporary Art: The Jean Ferrero Collection. And while at other auctions that we’ve mentioned, there were many contemporary artists, these two at Artcurial (S.V.V.) are somewhat focused on two artists, Ben (Benjamin Vautier) and Arman (Armand Pierre Fernandez Arman). But, there will be works by other artists, as well. For instance, Karel Appel’s Maternité from 1966 (Lot 80) is estimated at $27,155 – $38,017, and Erró’s The Twins, from 1991-92 (Lot 98) should be sold at $16,293 – $21,724. But, as we said, there will be A LOT of works by Ben and Arman. An auction simply called Photographs will be held at Sotheby’s in New York on Wednesday, April 1, in two sessions: first is at 10 AM, and the second one at 2 PM. This auction will also be displaying the wide range of photographs, from 19th Century to Post-War works, with some of the greatest name in the world of photography. There will be several works by famous Helmut Newton: Tied-Up Torso, Ramatuelle (a plate from Private Property Suite II) from 1980 (Lot 183), that is estimated at $10,000 – $15,000, Two Models in My Apartment, Paris, from 1975 (Lot 182) that should achieve similar price, Mercedes at Home, Paris from 1975 (Lot 181), estimated at $7,000 – $10,000, and Nude in Seaweed, St. Tropez (From Private Property Suite I) from 1981 (Lot 164), estimated at $5,000 – $7,000. There are a couple of works by Robert Mapplethorpe Lisa Lyon (In Water) from 1982 (Lot 166), that is estimated at $8,000 – $12,000, and Lisa Lyon (In Corset) from 1981 (Lot 165), that should go a bit higher ($10,000 – $15,000). Robert RauschenbergPhotem Series I, #1 (Bob’s Hand) from 1991 (Lot 144) should be sold for $30,000 – $50,000, and his other work, Cy + Relics – Rome (1952) (Lot 123), could break the $10,000 border (estimated at $7,000 – $10,000). There’s also Sunday Funnies, work from 1991 (Lot 169) by Sally Mann, that should change hands for $6,000 – $9,000. Nan Goldin’s Amanda on My Fortuny, Berlin, from 1993 (Lot 161) is estimated at $8,000 – $12,000, Laurie Simmons’ Room Underneath (Gold) from 1998 (Lot 160) should be sold for $5,000 – $7,000, and the priciest work among this group should be Shirin Neshat’s Untitled (From the Series Women of Allah) from 1996 (Lot 169) – it is estimated at $40,000 – $60,000.

Finally, on Wednesday, April 1 and on Thursday, April 2, at Phillips auction house in New York (450 Park Avenue, 10022 New York NY, United States), there will be held two auctions of photographs. Photographs Evening sale is set at 6 PM (April 1), and Photographs Day sale will have two sessions – first at 10 AM and second on 2 PM (April 2). If there won’t be some major surprises, Helmut Newton’s Walking Women, Paris, from 1981 (Lot 8) should achieve the highest price, and, maybe, even go over $1 million – it is estimated at $700,000 – $900,000. John Baldessari’s Green Sunset (with Trouble) from 1987 (Lot 13) could go close to half a million dollars (estimated at $300,000 – $400,000). Next three lots could easily go over $100,000 – Thomas Ruff’s Sterne 23h 39m/-55° from 1992 (Lot 15), ($80,000 – $120,000), Robert Mapplethorpe’s Flag from 1987 (Lot 24) ($80,000 – $120,000) and Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #103 from 1982 (Lot 14) ($90,000 – $120,000). Wolfgang Tillmans’ works Torino Installation – Impossible Colour I/Impossible Colour II/Bernhard Willhelm, looking back/Torino, from 2000/02 (Lot 25) is about to go for $50,000 – $70,000, and Pierre & Gilles’ Les amoureux: Johan et Léo from 1998 (Lot 23) should be sold for $40,000 – $60,000.
 
Then, at Day sale, there’s gonna be Massimo Vitali’s Deauville Beach from 2011 (Lot 309) for $30,000 – $50,000, Alex Prager’s Despair from 2010 (Lot 164) for the same price, as well as Elger Esser’s Les Paradis I and II from 2001 (Lot 279). Walead Beshty’s Four Magnet, Three Color Curl (CMY: Irvine, California, September 13th 2009, Fuji Crystal Archive Type C) from 2012 (Lot 280) could go for $20,000 – $30,000, and so could Alex Prager’s Crowd #2 (Emma) from 2012 (Lot 273). Helmut Newton’s Nude in seaweed, Saint-Tropez from 1981 (Lot 119) is estimated at $15,000 – $25,000, as well as Andreas Gursky’s Porto Bahnhof from 1988 (Lot 293) and two works by Sally MannJessie at 12 from 1994 (Lot 233) and The Wet Bed from 1987 (Lot 232).
