Unfortunately, Africa’s marginalization is not limited just to politics or economical global trends. Rich and diverse art tradition of this continent is also absent from the global contemporary scene. African art is really much more than South African graffiti scene, street masterpieces aiming to send a strong political message, or globally renowned masters, such as El Anatsui or Marlene Dumas. The African contemporary art is much more vivid than the few globally recognized names. Its vividness and complexity derive from the fact that Africa is composed of 54 countries (as the official name of the African Art Fair underlines), and the countless list of amazing artists coming from these states. Recognizing an extraordinary potential contemporary African art has, Touria El Glaoui founded 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair, that is about to make its Brooklyn, New York debut.

1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair is a leading transnational platform dedicated to promoting African and Africa-related art works and projects. This fair has established itself at the forefront of the rapidly emerging contemporary African market, as a pioneer in its field, with an expert selection of participating galleries and their ambitious lectures and panel discussions with some of the art world’s key thinkers. For the first time in New York, 1:54 Contemporary African Fair will showcase 16 select galleries hailing from global territories such as South Africa, Nigeria, Morocco, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, the UK and the USA to showcase over 60 emerging and established international artists. Apart from the main program, 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair has a very interesting supporting program as well, with critical conversations series – Forum, a program of talks, panels, and lectures.
