June 16, 2014
Asja Nastasijevic is an Art Historian with the major in Modern Art, involved in art writing and criticism for several years now. Art is her passion and writing about it is both work and pleasure.

Since its debut in 1970, Art Basel has become the Modern and contemporary art world’s premier platform. Described as the ‘Olympics of the Art World’, Art Basel is held annually in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong thus being the only art fair with such global reach. Over 70,000 art lovers visit Art Basel every year. The show draws tens of thousands of visitors – collectors, gallerists, artists, curators, art enthusiasts – from across the globe who come to experience the highest quality Modern and contemporary art.

Masters and Stars

Located in the heart of Europe, the original Art Basel show brings over 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. From June 19 to 22, the work of more than 4,000 artists will be presented, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars. The artwork at this year’s Art Basel in Basel is spread across eight show sectors, each of which has a particular focus and its own committee of experts who make the final selection of show participants.

Promotion of Visual Arts

Art Basel is strongly rooted in the principle that galleries play an essential role in the development and promotion of visual arts. As such, it has been a driving force in supporting the role that galleries play in the nurturing of artists. Galleries from around the globe make up the impressive list of participants in Basel’s show. Some of them are an integral part of the Art Basel, such as Galerie Perrotin, David Zwirner and Gagosian Gallery.

Perrotin, Gagosian and Zwirner

Galerie Perrotin is one of the leading contemporary art galleries, with spaces in Paris, Hong Kong and New York. The man behind it is Emmanuel Perrotin who is responsible for launching the careers of Damien Hirst and Takashi Murakami. Gagosian Gallery is a contemporary art gallery owned and directed by Larry Gagosian, one of the most important people in the contemporary art world. It is a multisite gallery franchise with eleven spaces around the world. David Zwirner is another very successful gallery with spaces in New York and London. The gallery has helped foster the careers of some of the most influential artists working today, including Luc Tuymans and Neo Rauch, and has maintained long-term representation of a wide-ranging, international group of artists.

14 Rooms

Art Basel in Basel 2014 will offer each day a full program of exhibitions and events, including symposiums, films, and artist talks. We draw your attention to the exhibition 14 Rooms, a key collaboration between Art Basel, Fondation Beyeler and Theater Basel. The exhibition is curated by Klaus Biesenbach (Director of MoMA PS1) and Hans Ulrich Obrist, (Co-director of Exhibitions and Programs and Director of International Projects at the Serpentine Gallery). 14 Rooms brings together 14 international artists including Ed Atkins, Marina Abramović, Damien Hirst, Bruce Nauman, to name a few. It will open to the public ahead of Art Basel on Saturday, June 14 and will stay on view until June 22. Further afield, exhibitions and events are offered by cultural institutions in Basel and the surrounding area, creating an exciting, region-wide art week. Save the date!
