Bai Yiluo is a self-taught photographer who converted to contemporary art while working as an assistant to Ai Weiwei. His work uses repetitive motifs, in the form of faces in black and white or flies’ legs, built into large formations to accumulate a sense of a whole.

Yiluo was born in Luoyang, Henan Province, China in 1968.

Many of his works put old, discarded things to surprising uses, exploring in the process the many meanings of value. Spring and Autumn 1 (2007) is a tree made of farm tools. The artist says he wanted to give life to the rusting rakes, hoes and pitchforks, and reflect on the ways in which human civilization both shapes the natural world and is shaped by it. Recycling (2008) plays with the idea of love and its value with a garbage collector’s tricycle cart bearing a giant anatomical model of a heart. How often, the artist asks, do we devalue our feelings, give away our love too cheaply, or reject the love that others offer us?  Bai Yiluo, who earned his living at a factory in Luoyang before he began producing art, once said: “It does not matter what you do, you will never be able to escape the experiences you’ve passed through.”

Fittingly, his photography-based installations and sculptures are recognizable for their labor intensity and use of found objects. For Bai, the primary themes of his artwork have to do with the intersection of popular and traditional Chinese culture in shaping Chinese identity. Some of his most prominent works feature discarded anonymous ID photos as a primary material, as in Untitled (US Dollar) (2008), Animal Destiny (2005), and Fate No. 4 (2007). His work is often characterized by political overtones and violent imagery.

Yiluo  is currently living and working in Beijing.
