Originally coming from the UK, since 2000 based in Berlin, Boxi has become a highly recognized artist whose multi-layered stencil artworks can be found in many galleries as well as on the streets around the globe. His ability to fit in human figures with the urban surroundings to look like real has given street art a completely new dimension. Artist’s mix of the stencil and freehand life-size works, full of details, leave the impression of a haunting, sometimes the heart-breaking post-apocalyptic world. The variety of themes like love, loneliness, sadness, frustration and paranoia are harmonized in such precise way that they represent the compact image.

Boxi’s Life Inspiration and Support,

Boxi was born in 1974 in Kent, England. Since 1996 he holds a BA Fine Arts degree in painting from the London St. Martins School of Art. If he didn’t have a chance to see the amazing stencils of EVOL and PISA73 from CT/INK, and Berlin’s catchy urban culture, the artist would still make oil paintings. The German capital has given him freedom and opportunities, both professional and personal, where he can create his images and enjoy in the changing world of art. In some cases Boxi likes to show his reinterpretation of the classics, among which are Picasso’s famous Embrace from 1903, Courbet’s Bonjour Monsieur Courbet painting from 1854, or Caspar David Friedrich’s 19th Century piece called Wanderer above the Sea of Fog. Author’s ambition to be among the good ones and the support from his family inspire him to focus on what he does best.

Artist’s Style and Color

Throughout the artist’s paintings, viewers can see a note of dark and disillusioned romanticism, where the use of different techniques combined with an extensive pallet of muted colors, let human figures connect with the environment. Boxi’s realistic and highly detailed stencils interact with space and change the perception of the image. During the traveling around the world without the right equipment, he found out how much he depends on the neutral grey color, with all its scale range and variants. Diverse materials like acrylic, paper, spray-paint, and oil are cleverly intertwined and placed within the installation or natural landscape in order to complete and define the artwork itself. Boxi uses fear, destruction with all their manipulations to channel a really alarming and exaggerated experience.

Boxi in the World

Under the camouflage that leaves the impression of the doom and gloom, artist’s sculptures, paintings, and stencils contain a hidden light that emerges and catches people’s attention. Boxi praises the work and influence of Banksy, Vermeer, The London School, Turner, Whistler, Swoon, PJ Harvy and many more. His artwork can be seen in Hamburg, Dortmund, Miami, and Los Angeles. Places like the Museum of Modern Art in Bremen or the Lazarides Gallery in London have displayed his pieces.

Boxi lives and works in Berlin.
