Exploring the theme of identity and belonging, Cecilia Paredes makes distinctive “photo performances” in which her body becomes a part of the sophisticated background, disappearing amongst the ornamentation. Merging with the landscape, she creates her own identity in relation to her origins, questioning the environmental influence on our personal development. Paredes makes performances, starting from body painting and transforming herself into animals, plants or landscapes, processing the theme of adjustment to different surroundings.

Cecilia Paredes: The Artist in a Quest for Identity

Paredes was born in 1950 in Lima, Peru where she gained her education in Plastic Arts at the Catholic University of Lima and continued the studies at Cambridge Arts and Crafts School in England. With the masterful skill for camouflage, the artist uses the body paints to become a part of the surroundings, leaving only her dark hair to be in the contrast with the floral patterns of the background. Her photography demonstrates the female body as a something sacred indicating the changed and even the wrong perception of it during the last decades. Focusing on the exploration of the boundaries of nature, Paredes uses her own body as the medium between the spiritual and natural world[1]. Managing to transform herself into the subject of her work, her ever-present figure is an expression of her interiority and deepest feelings. The Landscape series, one of her most acclaimed works, is more than just a disappearance illusion, revealing Paredes’ quest for belonging: “The theme behind all is re-location after displacement and migration and how one has to adjust in order to belong. Tough it is, but it has to be done, without forgetting our origin.”[2]With the help of her assistants, Paredes paints her face, more often hands and back, following the pattern of the wallpaper behind. Infusing herself into the background, it’s hard to notice the human figure in beautiful design.
