David Stoupakis is an American painter and graphic novel illustrator, known for his surrealistic, gothic art.
Sometimes based on old photographs of long-gone children, his eerie portraits create a feeling of haunted places and grim fairytales. His timeless beings and creatures inhabit surreal places not of this world, depicted in a haunting imagery that visually merges Alice in Wonderland and The Exorcist.
Born David Michael Stoupakis in 1974, in Brighton, Massachusetts, the artist had to cope with a severe learning disability throughout his education. Doctors informed his parents that David could develop more on the artistic side, and that he may have the ability to become a great artist. From that moment and later in career, his parents who are also artists themselves gave full and unconditional support to his newfound artistic ability.
In 1992, Stoupakis gave the Art Institute of Boston a one year try and quickly found that being trained was not for him. In the following year, David decided to become a self-taught artist and was dedicated to developing himself. In 1996, Stoupakis got a job as a 2D and 3D Animator Artist for one gaming company. Finally in 1999, the artist chose to focus solely on painting.
Passionate about album art and music in general, Stoupakis collaborated with several bands, most significantly with Korn for their See You on the Other Side and Haloburn’s debut album.
From painting the actual covers down to the designing of the booklet with the CD label, Stoupakis is thrilled when he has a chance to collaborate with some of his favorite musicians. Creative process of creating an album art vary from project to project. Sometimes a band comes with an already conceived idea of the wanted image, and in other cases the singer just gives David one lyric line. The awarded album cover of See You on the Other Side was all based off of the lyrics that Jonathan Davis, also known as JDevil, the frontman of Korn gave to Stoupakis – “I’m just a child with the tears in its eyes. I am holding this gift that is broken.”
David Stoupakis’ art has been critically acclaimed many times – he was a winner of Direct Art Magazine’s Surrealist Artist Feature Award in 2003, and a winner of IGN’s Best Album Artwork for Korn’s See You on the Other Side in 2006. In addition, he was one of the 50 artists chosen to paint a tribute Dean Guitar for the late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell.
Works of Stoupakis have been featured in numerous magazines and publications, including Spin, Revolver, Guitar World, Metal Hammer, Woodstock Tattoo, Juxtapose, LA Times, and Rolling Stone. His art has also been exhibited in many group and solo shows, mostly throughout the US, in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Miami, but also internationally in Germany, Italy and France.
Most recently, Stoupakis’ art has been exhibited as a part of duo exhibition The Kindly Ones, together with his long term friend and associate, Mention3. The exhibition took place at Last Rites gallery, in New York.
