Dean Sameshima is American artist who became known for his provocative nude photos. His recognized for his never-ending quest into the visual investigation of maleness through the creation that portrays unabashed sexual imagery while retaining a quiet vulnerability.

Dean Sameshima was born in Torrance, California in 1971. He got his bachelor degree at the California Institute of Arts, Valencia, CA and later obtained an MFA at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA. He belongs to the new generation that is revolutionizing the art scene in the American West Coast.

Sameshima has cultivated a raw aesthetic that feels crafted and craft-influenced; The 1970’s source materials are nostalgic in nature and the process behind these materials often replicates the low economy of production associated with an underground DIY style – a technique that communicates the social constructs within which the particular male identity once operated.

For many works, Sameshima has taken the established artistic notion of “the male gaze” and repositioned it within the gay culture to explore the projection and cultivation of personal identity in a marginalized social group.  Sameshima’s work is not solely a post-pictures-generation continuation. He has ability to express similar sentiments across mediums. He makes work that is simultaneously ghostly and living. Drawing on moments that he fears may be lost if not captured and thereby instilling them with new breath and a critical re-appropriation that is sharp and yet loving.

Sameshima currently lives and works in Berlin.
