Esteban del Valle is a American interdisciplinary artist currently exploring issues surrounding the relationship between theology and the pursuit of “true” democracy. Drawn to the iconic imagery of revolutionary struggles as they appear in the genre of history painting, photography, and film, Esteban has been investigating the moral and ethical questions pertaining to the use of “force” in the struggle for justice and equality. His work often takes the form of large mixed media drawings on canvas.
Esteban was born 1984 in Chicago and earned his BFA in Art History and Painting from Southern Illinois University and a Masters Degree in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design.
He did his first tag on a school bench when he was in junior high school. Soon, he was hitting the back of K-Mart and piecing under nearby bridges. In that time he had a crew with all friends who was into hip hop and they called themselves FYM (Free Your Mind). Hip-hop and Chicago’s rich mural culture had big influence on his work. What Esteban especially loves about street art is that it inspires people to take to the streets to do more than just their names.
He doesn’t like to work from sketches. He would rather sketch on a wall. But much of what he does has to be pre-approved, and so he needs to have a basic drawing of what he plans to paint. “I’m more experimental and I’m more about moving to do what challenges me.”
Some of his favorites artists are: Carrie Moyer, Haig Aivazian, Jayson Musson, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Dave McKenzie, Os Gemeos and Poser aka Pose MSK.
Esteban has produced murals throughout various parts of the USA, such as New York, NY, Chicago, IL, San Antonio, TX, and Kansas City, MO, Spartanburg, SC, and Provincetown, MA. He has been in numerous publications and his mural work has been featured on HGTV, NY1 News, News 12 Brooklyn, and the New York Times. In 2009, while at the Hub-Bub residency in Spartanburg South Carolina, Esteban collaborated with the Spartanburg city ballet to create their fall production. In 2010, Esteban was both a writer in resident at ISLAND in Michigan and a visual artist in residence at the Djerassi Program in California. In 2011, Esteban worked in Los Angles designing a set for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival selection Filly Brown and was a participant at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Most recently, he has completed a 7-month fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA.
Esteban Del Valle lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
