Fang Lu is an uprising female director from China famous for her unique style of camera direction.

Fang Lu born in Guangzhou China in 1981. She received her BFA from Graphic Design department at School of Visual Art in New York in 2005, and MFA from the New Genres department at the San Francisco Arts Institute in 2007. During these years, her made works such as Straight Outta HK and Panda Express.

In her works, the camera is not used to document a phenomenon, but to transform simple tasks and everyday actions. As the camera enters an everyday, common space, time and objects of portrayal transform through which an altered representation is created. The same transformation also happens to the performer. In fact, the most apparent example would be public space under surveillance, and how our behavior in public is in fact, shaped by these cameras. Therefore, when the camera is intentionally placed within a private space, the camera has an instrumental effect on the performer (either he or other performers). She is interested in this unique characteristic of the camera. Therefore, in many of her works, she creates an isolated filming environment in order to allow myself as a performer or other performers to enter a staged scenario. A lone individual may forget the existence of the outside world and that may be quite a liberating moment, whether used to play a role or complete a task.

Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Boers-li Gallery, Beijing (2013); Pekin Fine Arts, Hong Kong (2013), Arrow Factory, Beijing (2012), Space Station, Beijing (2010), Borges Libreria Institute of Contemporary Art, Guangzhou (2011); and in group exhibitions such as the 28 Chinese in Rubell Family Collection Museum in Miami, My Generation in Tampa Museum (2014), On/Off in Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (2012), Shenzhen Sculpture Biennial (2012), CAFAM Future Exhibition (2012), We Remember the Sun in Walter & McBean Gallery in San Francisco (2008)

She is co-founder of Video Bureau, an independent video archive resource in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Lu currently lives and works in Beijing.
