Gao Yuan is a fine art photographer who explores cultural identity and the multi-layered arts of a society using symbols and signs from ancient painting, graffiti art, and even tattoos. Born and raised in KaoShing, Taiwan, Yuan earned her BFA in Fine Art from Tainan University of technology in 1985 and her MFA in photography from Nihon academy of fine art, Tokyo, Japan, in 1989. She attended The New York Film Academy to sharpen her skills in video arts. Yuan practiced commercial and fashion photography while pursuing her career in Fine Art photography.

Gao Yuan’s Work

Cultivated by her international background in Taiwan, Japan, China, and the U.S., Yuan in her short films, videos and still photography, portrait different cultural phenomenon and express psychological and social meanings, below visual appearance and aesthetic arrangement. In her recent “Twelve Moons” and “Graffiti” series, she well-blended the roots of western and eastern cultures elements and showed how cultural identity is shaped by the socio-political environment.

Gao Yuan – Awards and Exhibitions

Gao Yuan has been the recipient of the Grand Prize at Kaunas Lithuania Biennial 2012. In 2009 she was awarded The Terna Contemporary Art Prize, Rome, Italy and was an award winner at the Soho Photo Gallery Competition, New York, 2004.
Gao Yuan’s work has been exhibited widely in Europe, China and the United States, notably at the Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, Frederieke Taylor Gallery in New York, Ping Yao International Photography Festival, China. In addition, Yuan’s works are in numerous private collection include Museum Calouste Gulbenkian Lisbonne, Portugal Museum Palacio Consistorial, Cartegena, Spain and Artist Pension Trust foundation, New York.

Gao Yuan – Au Féminin: Women Photographing Women

Gao Yuan’s photography has been included in the book “Au féminin: Women Photographing Women (1849–2009)”, published by the Centre Culturel Calouste Gulbenkian in Paris in 2009. This book reviews photography by women over the last 160 years, including such luminaries as Julia Margaret Cameron, Ruth Bernhard, Diane Arbus and Cindy Sherman. Gao Yuan is the only Chinese photographer included in this book.

Gao Yuan lives and works in New York City and Beijing, China.
