Gerald Moroder is an Italian sculptor that deals with the fragility of human beings, reducing his sculptures to the essence of materiality in order to question its relationship with the Being. A sublime and profound theme, as are his sculptures, and rare as it is in modern art, it gives the allure of ancient contemporaries to his artworks. His inner journeys are translated into the shapes of these slender and stark figures, as he addresses the radical research in order to come as closer to transcending the matter itself.
Moroder is born in Milan, Italy in 1972. He graduated in 1989 from the Art institute of Ortisei and finished vocational school in Selva Gardena. Ever since he has been working as an apprenticeship for many sculptors and has done some autodidactic training and courses. He is also a member of Unika, an association of craftsman and artist from Val Gardena. He has exhibited in many art galleries and museums across Europe, the first important solo exhibition was Skulpturen, at the Galerie im Kies in Altach in 2011, but the first solo exhibition that gained wider recognition is the exhibition called The space of Being in 2014 in San Gimignano. It consists of almost celestial figures of elongated humans that reflect in plastic terms the meditations of space and time. In 2017, his exhibition entitled Fantasy meets reality is at show at the Gallery Hegemann. Exhibition Soul is currently on in the Museo Civico in Chiusa, Italy and will move on to the Art Gallery ISculpture in San Gimignano.
Moroder’s figures resemble a lot to Alberto Giacometti‘s but, they have a specific nobility of their pure abstractness that differs them. They seem levitating, leaning free from gravity and mass and in that sense are more inclined to a spiritual realm of thought. They are made firstly out of wood, and then formed in porphyry rock – an ancient material that brings a lot of art history in mind. But their eroded and scratched structure, as well resemble a lot to Giacometti’s work. One can almost feel their need to overcome their materiality and become essential. But, the celestial nature of it is questioned because of their porosity and corrosion, as if the traces of time are being highlighted and the sculptures are in the slow process of diminishing.
The artist tries to distance himself from everyday life and to reapproach the basic principles of Being, to express what lies beneath the material level. He uses material like wood, soil, brick, iron and porphyry mixtures. Once some of the materials become stratified, in the oxidation process they lose some parts of themselves and become something new. This process Moroder cherishes and tries to poetically repeat it in his sculptures. In that way, the innate yearning and vital tensions of the materials alone levitate between the spiritual and material level.
The artist is represented by Gallery Hegemann, from Munich.
