Behind the pseudonym of Lor Dethal lies Nemanja Torlak, a writer for Widewalls intrigued and moved by diversity in art and in the lives of those who create it. It is often the unexpected that come forth and surprise us, and art is a world that allows it and makes it possible. David beats the Goliath daily, and writing about it is a pleasure.

Art has taken on countless forms over the centuries, and the horizon of styles and materials used just keeps getting wider. Regardless of the format, there is an element that is essential to the portrayal of all artistic pieces, the absence of which makes the expression of most pieces impossible. Many artists have played with light in the past, and it is in the center of Giovanni Ozzola’s work. Displaying sunlight and focusing on the three-dimensionality of space in his photographs and videos, he brings the two aspects together in a dazzling display that can be associated with painting.

Enter Light

Ever since his return to Italy in 2001, Ozzola has been set upon and developing a new artistic approach, one involving a connection with the light source. Focusing on the light as a paramount ingredient for perception, his photographs, and recently videos, all include light as a pillaring element in their structure.  Normally, light is a necessary component for most of portrayals to work, but Ozzola uses it to his advantage in his photos as an element of its own, with a nearly physical quality to it. Giving his photos certain tone and combined with the background, viewers get to experience an almost paint-like nature in his works, engaging all of the senses.

Space of the Superficial

There’s more than light that permeates the quality of Ozzola’s images, giving them a layer that invites reconsideration of the piece. His masterful settings portray three-dimensionality through the piece itself, and the research on the mental image and the essence of subjects has undoubtedly furthered this effect. Another aspect of his scenes is an omnipresent opening that reveals a certain setting in the background, almost acting as a portal leading out from the containment of the current surrounding to the endless horizon. Playing with perception, and in contrast to the ever-elusive horizon, the artist places objects closer to the eye that also grab attention, like the neon lights that illuminate the space within or slate slabs that serve as surfaces fit for etching.

Quality of a Painting

Bringing all the elements together into his pieces, the Spain-based artist born in 1982 gives an ephemeral feeling to the carefully constructed artifice, a quality usually tied with the process of painting. His work has been exhibited widely in both solo and group shows including Mori Museum, Tokyo; The Chelsea Art Museum, New York; Elgiz Museum Istanbul Turkey; Sharjah Maraya Art Centre, Dubai; Fondazione Stelline, Milan Italy, and others. Although he primarily plays with visual elements, his videos and photographs truly engage all of the senses, inviting the viewer into the space of the portrayed scenery.

The artist is represented by Gazelli Art House.

Giovanni Ozzola lives and works in Tenerife, Spain.
