Gustave Asselbergs was born in Amsterdam. In 1952 the family moved to Nijmegen, where Asselbergs went to Dominicus College and then studied at the Institute for Arts and Crafts Education. In 1961, he exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, he won a Royal Grant and in 1966 he acquired the prestigious Harkness scholarship, allowing him to work for two years in New York.
