Sir John Lavery was an Irish painter best known for his portraits and wartime depictions. Born in Belfast in the spring of 1856, Lavery’s childhood was one of perpetual instability. His father, a wine and liquor merchant, drowned on a voyage to North America in 1859, followed swiftly by the death of his mother. He passed from the home of one reluctant relative to the other through most of his youth, spending a number of unsettled years between places like Moira, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, and Magheralin, before finding work as a photographer’s assistant in Glasgow in 1873.
