Kata Legrady is a well-known Hungarian visual artist who belongs to a long and continuously growing tradition of artists for whom the object represents the trigger for her thought and artistic activities.
Legrady was born in 1974 in Barcs, Hungary. She comes from a family that initially intended her for the opera and studied music and song at Pecs Academy and finally chose the fine arts. Trained as a lyric opera singer at the Pécs Music Conservatory and studied drama at the Gor Nagy Maria Drama School, participating in various musical and film project.s before launching her career in the visual arts.
Her sculptures and installations disconcertingly combine objects associated with childhood with those associated with violence; two of her most frequent motifs are firearms and brightly colored confections. Legrady gained broad recognition for her series “guns & candies” (2008), in which she made enlarged reproductions of machine guns, grenades, and handguns, and then covered them with Smarties candies. She proceeds by collision, arousing a sculptural confrontation and symbolic encounter of two different worlds. On the one hand weapons of war and sweets on the other. In other words, her art represents a short circuit between lethal and harmless, a tension between childhood and destruction and between freedom from care and suffering.
Since 2010, she had been making and exhibiting her work throughout Europe and beyond.
Legardy lives and works on a relation between Hanover and Budapest.
