Kate Joyce is an American artist best known for her full-frame (with an aversion to cropping) compositions, but as well as for her newly hybrid of in-camera framing and in-studio cropping.
Joyce was born and grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She earned her BFA in photojournalism at San Francisco State University. Later on, she perfected her artistic education at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University where she studied documentary photography.
In the beginning of her career, Joyce worked for the famous architectural photography studio, Hedrich Blessing, as an apprentice, web designer and staff photographer.
When Joyce mastered the craft at HB, she established her own studio in 2010: Kate Joyce Studios, where she still works mostly on architectural and design projects.
Kate Joyce usually photographs the built environment showing how it is connected to our life. While working on that particular subject, Kate tries to combine emotional awareness with geometry, story and rhythm.
Through her fruitful career, Kate collaborated with various artists such as Rebecca Solnit and Susan Schwartzenberg (on the book titled Hollow City: The Siege of San Francisco and the Crisis of American Urbanism). She worked with an artistic duo Luftwerk, as well as with writer and W. Eugene Smith biographer, Sam Stephenson.
Kate received a Lewis Hine Documentary Initiative Fellowship so she went to Bloemfontein, South Africa where she worked for a year on early childhood education documentary projects with a local NGO. Her work can be found in the collections of The Museum of New Mexico and Duke University Perkins Library Special Collections & Rare Archive. Kate’s work also appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review Daily, Harper’s Magazine, The Chicagoan, Architect Magazine and The New York Times.
Kate has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is represented by Rick Wester Fine Art, NYC.
