When his hometown was captured in time what would be claimed as the end of history, Laung Chi Wo did not see himself as an artist. In the early ‘90’s, the whole generation of young people was confronted with the transition, lost in their own identity search. Leung became an artist highly dedicated to history, expressing it in his work on the very profound way. He discusses the issues of difference between perception and understanding in the urban environment of cultural context. His works, which mainly range from photography, paintings, performances, videos and installations were shown all over the world.

From Hong Kong to the World

Leung Chi Wo was born in 1968, as the youngest of four children, in densely populated area of the Hong Kong. After his studies at Chinese University, he was caught up in the specific historic moment of the 90’s. Hong Kong was a cultural desert, a place where contemporary art practically did not exist. His generation was somewhere in the middle, living between homeland and foreign cultures. On the beginning of his art career, he experimented most with the photography which remained the major form of his expression. After he obtained a Post-Diploma in Culture of Photography from l’Istituto per lo Sviluppo Socio-Economico Dello Spilimberghese in Italy and an MFA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Leung Chi Wo started to conquer international art scene. He was the part of the international biennales and triennials in Venice, Shanghai, Busan, Gwangju, Manchester and Guangzhou and his solo exhibitions have been held in Hong Kong, London, New York, Vienna, Toronto and Sapporo.

Creating the History

In 1996, Leung was one of the founders of the first contemporary art space in Hong Kong, Para/Site. It was a very important self-organized institution which has grown into the specific art center, engaged in different activities and collaborations. Para/Site is also a publisher of the P/S magazine, Hong Kong’s first visual art paper and initiator of the educational platform intended for art professionals. In the same year, Leung started to experiment with his home-made pinhole camera. It was his tool for series Traveler, produced between 1993 and 1997 on his route to Europe. Leung Chi Wo’s 2015 survey exhibition Press the Button, at OCAT Shenzhen, induced the visitors to push the button so they could see the part of the sky as seen looking straight up through an enclosing prism of high buildings. His aim was to show the city environment in a non-specific way, encouraging visitor’s imagination. This exhibition represented the connection between Leung’s various works, showing how his chosen medium is important to the concept.

Between Perception and Reality

As a Hong Kong native, in his works, Leung explores his hometown, questioning its social spirit, history and urban space. He often goes beyond, investigates the background and memories, historic consciousness, looking for the complex relation between perception and reality. He is using photographs to capture some past moments in order to reveal individual’s identity.

Leung is represented by Blindspot Gallery in Hong Kong.

Leung Chi Wo lives and works in Hong Kong.
