Ma Ke is a Chinese painter born in 1970 in Zibo, Shandong Province who depict human events or interactions, as well as landscapes. He studied at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts from 1990 to 1994 and finished his further education in Central Academy of Fine Arts from 2002 to 2005.
Before he attended Tianjin Academy of Fine Art he had been trained by his father in traditional Chinese oil painting and Russian social realism, and didn’t know anything about western modern and contemporary art. During his studies Ma Ke was introduced to Van Gogh, Monet, Francis Bacon, as well as European contemporary artists, so he realized that system in China is too closed for artist. In the west the artists “choose” the way to go and are free to express their inner self, while in China the people and the art never changed. He knew he must find his own voice. His figurative paintings contain one or two people portrayed at a single moment, invariably, an aura of discomfort emanates from one of them. Monochrome backgrounds surround the figures, pushing up to their often thickly-drawn outlines. Wide, animated strokes pull their shapes into being, and the graze of a less loaded brush dragging across faces and bodies in a Baconesque manner proves apt to suggest shadow or tension.
Ma Ke has presented his work in many group and solo exhibitions in his homeland, as well as in USA, Germany and Singapore.
He lives and works in China.
