Paul Kessling is a Scottish abstract art painter, born in Dundee in 1965. He is known for his paintings, rich in color, form and texture; and influenced by his training as a sculptor.
While young Paul Kessling was growing up, the artist’s father who was a Polish refugee, used to paint and visit the National Gallery with his son. His father particularly liked works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Francisco Goya, Rubens, Bosch, Rembrandt van Rijn, Picasso and the Cubists. That was Paul’s first encounter with the world of art.
Kessling attended Wimbledon School of Art in London from 1985 to 1987, where he studied sculpture, trying to separate himself from his father’s influence . Later, he received his MA degree from The Royal College of Art in London in 1989, under the tutelage of Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, a Scottish sculptor and artist, who taught in the Ceramics Department.
During his studies, the artist experimented and learned about various media. He won a traveling scholarship and studied the Eastern Island Statues, which resulted in a career shift to painting, the medium he has been exploring ever since, although he still regards himself as a sculptor who paints.
While studying at the Royal College of Art, the artist went to Conservation Department at the V&A and found the inspiration for his abstract works in the sketches by Constable, which display movement and the use of fluid colors. Paul liked vitality and Constable’s gutsy application of paint. Kessling’s works also feature movement and fluidity, and focus on the changing weather and skies. The artist works with wet paint, creates layers and polishes them off when they are dry. His works are influenced by landscapes and the places he has seen.
