Pavle Pavlovic is a Croatian contemporary artist who paints mostly with oil colors. Lately he has been underpainting with egg tempera more frequently, and trying out some new options for achieving a more flickering painting surface.

Pavle was born 1983 in Belgrade, within a few months after his birth, he and his mother moved to Zagreb to be with his father. There, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2010. He wasn’t always interested in this type of painting. While in college, Pavle frequently experimented with various mediums and the possibilities they offered. It was during his last year of study that he settled his art into its current direction.

The aesthetics of his  paintings are mostly influenced by the contemporary culture he is surrounded with. As far as Art movements that have influenced him the most, it’s difficult to point out just one particularly significant to him.

“My primary source of inspiration are the everyday situations that surround me. Usually it’ll be one of the anomalies of contemporary society that I encounter on a day-to-day basis. I enjoy taking those anomalies and turning them around, attempting to place them in an entirely different context, and sometimes even bring them out into the absurd. I find so many really interesting things while surfing the web, as well. I’m fascinated by the existing virtual reality, which frequently pushes and displaces the boundaries of privacy – thus giving us the opportunity to witness a small part of a life of a person entirely unfamiliar to us.”

He is movie addict, but at the same time music plays an important role as well – especially in the process of painting. In regards to painting, he was influenced a lot by Late Gothic and Early Renaissance periods. However, it’s contemporary art that he finds particularly interesting, due to its dynamic nature.

“I feel that artists are positioned well to ask certain questions, and point out the problems and deviations of a society that’s far from the ideal.”

Pavle Pavlovic currently lives and works in Zagreb, Croatia.
