Since skateboarding grew out of surfing culture in the middle of the twentieth century, it has influenced and continue to influence numerous enthusiasts, musicians, and creatives. One of them is Peter Phobia, a German-born and Vienna-based artist and illustrator who started his career during his teens when he was heavily into skateboarding. Spending a lot of time outside and looking for skate spots in abandoned factories opened his eyes to graffiti and art in the urban environment. This fascination led him to create his own stickers, experimenting with spraypaint and eventually teaching himself to draw and paint. Additionally, he decided to devote himself to art, so he pursued studies in graphic design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Invitation to an Open Discussion

What began with simple drawings evolved a lot technically and conceptually over the years. He gave himself the freedom to experiment and learn by his mistakes. He sees his career as “a combination of many small pieces of a puzzle that helped me grow as an artist as well as a human being.” He is deeply influenced by pop culture, absurd moments of everyday life and the environment he lives in. His oeuvre is rather a specific statement into the world but an open invitation for a discussion on current topics in society. The artist aims to encourage people to be self-aware, build their own opinion and reflect on their surroundings and things they are exposed to, not only in art but also in politics and life.

Illustration Work and Influences

The artist primarily focuses on drawing and his works vary in size from large-scale pieces to small works on paper. He prepares a sketch digitally by experimenting with color, composition, different elements, often excerpts of texts and afterward executing it on the paper. Often this is not a linear process but more a back and forth in between the different steps. The use of color in his drawings is mostly restrained, while written elements and quotes like Born to win and Pigeons playing ping pong, play an important role. Growing up as a kid watching American movies, Disney cartoons and reading comics like The Simpsons influenced him a lot and this still reflects in his practice. He is also influenced by the work of his friends like Axel Void and Boicut, as well as artists like John Baldessari, David Shrigley, Marcel Dzama and Wes Lang.

A Collector of Memories

The artist sees himself as “a collector of memories, surreal moments of everyday life, quotes, images and other stuff I can relate to.” He is also a passionate golf player, has an obsession with writing lists, loves bananas and carries his sketchbook everywhere he goes. His work has been featured in many magazines and brands in Austria and it has been exhibited in many personal and collective shows in France, Austria, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Serbia, Lithuania and Mexico.

Peter Phobia lives and works in Vienna.
