Ricardo Cases is a Spanish conceptual photographer born in Orihuela in 1971. His work is distinguished by a use of intense colors, whether he is documenting traditional activities in rural Spain or gently poking fun at the peculiarities of city living. Photographer earned his BA in Sciences of Information from the Universidad del País Vasco, Bilbao.
Paloma al Aire
Cases gained recognition in the photography world with his series Paloma al Aire (Dove into the Air), which captures colorful pigeon races in the Spanish regions of Valencia and Murcia, a game consisting of releasing one female pigeon and dozens of male pigeons that chase her trying to get her attention. None of them ever gets too intimate, but the winner is the one that spends the most time close to her. The winner is not the most athletic, the toughest or the purest in breed but the more courteous, the one showing more constancy and having the strongest reproductive instinct.
For this competition the animals are painted in different colors and patterns. Cases’ images capture the men’s fascination and passion, with which they practice this hobby. The spots of colors in the sky, in the trees and on the balconies do not remind of pigeons, but rather of exotic birds. They seem magical, picturesque almost surreal. Cases documented the sport between 2008 and 2011. His photobook Paloma al Aire that was one of the most acclaimed photo books of 2011.
El Porqué de las Naranjas
In one of Cases’ latest work, El porqué de las naranjas (The reason of oranges), he does not document the surface symptoms of reality, but instead renders the non-visible, the mechanistic. In his immediate surroundings, the fertile region of Levante in Spain, the photographer reveals ephemeral moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. Out on the streets he sets out to make visible the laws that regulate the universe, hunting down the elementary participles in the same vein as a nuclear physicist attempting to identify the Higgs particle. Cases uses the landscape as a laboratory, a place where these mechanisms can manifest themselves freely. The work is not a portrait of Levante itself, but of the spirit of Levante, and thus of the spirit of Spain as a whole. Amongst Paloma al Aire and El porqué de las naranjas, Cases has published photobooks Belleza de barrio, 2008, as well as La caza del lobo congelado, 2009.
In 2009 Cases has started the publishing house Fiesta Ediciones with designer Natalia Troitiño. Their philosophy is to publish works from authors who spend most of their time working and not just giving visibility to their projects. In 2006 Cases joined the Blank Paper Photography Collective, and since 2013 he has been a member of the AMPARO platform.
Colaboration with TIME Magazine
In 2012 TIME asked Cases to travel to Florida to cover Republican presidential primary, which Mitt Romney won. Although Cases had never photographed American politics before, he captured very vibrant images of candidate former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and the voters he hoped to persuade, as well as events for Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. In 2013 Cases came to Maryland and spent three days documenting the worship services at two evangelical churches for TIME: La Roca de la Eternidad, Rock of Eternity Church, and Iglesia Cuadrangular el Calvario, Calvary Foursquare Church. Evangelical worship service is specific because it usually includes rock bands, streamers, tambourines, flags, dancing, and loud praying. Cases’ images capture the blend of intensity, isolation, and fiesta that is often part of the evangelical experience.
Ricardo Cases lives and works between Madrid and Valencia.
