Suzanne Valadon was a self-taught French artist born in 1865, one of the most notable female artists of the period and of Monmarte circle of painters. Her artistic career started from modeling for other artists, such as Renoir. A member of the Montmartre’s artistic circle, she was a close friend of the fellow artists Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec and the composer Erik Satie. In 1894, Valadon became the first woman painter admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
