Toni Spyra is a German artist who by modifying objects of everyday use wants to provoke a new point of view concerning the different ways of using everyday things. In an almost fun way Austrian based artist Toni Spyra gives the viewer a thought-provoking impulse.  He creates a sense of familiarity, but also a feel of irritation. At second glance, the viewer is able to comprehend the whole picture and realize how Toni Spyra transports his own concerns about social problems.

Born in 1981 in Germany, Toni is self-taught artist whose works are always based on social problems and he wants to leave a comment on that. ”If I have an idea that it worth to communicate I go out and search for the right spot. It helps me to prepare things in the studio. I also have an archive of favorite spots which I already discovered.”

For him it’s very important that the location fits his art. It increases the probability of understanding for the intended statement. Therefore he never forces an installation at a certain location. The photography is used for the documentation of the temporary existing works, but also to reach a bigger audience. In the first place his focus is on the streets, but it depends on the idea. Some ideas work better out there and some need a clearly defined environment.

Toni draws inspiration from art, science, human behavior… irritating things that give him good impulses – things he doesn’t understand or can’t classify. He believes that in most cases it’s enough to have your eyes open, also reading and travelling helps a lot. Numerous influences throughout the years shaped his work as it is today: friends, graffiti culture, design and art scene, music, travel experiences, etc.

His favorite installation is always his latest work or the one he is planning. Toni always tries to create an even better work to overtrump his recent works – the typically enthusiasm for new ideas.

According to Spyra, as an artist you have to show things and situations from another/unknown point of view. You must evoke emotions and set the viewers thinking. It does not matter what kind of emotion you address as long as you sensitize. “I communicate my message in the form of an installation, which the viewer could receive in three layers. First layer: entertainment. Second layer: awareness of the environment. Third layer: If you note the name of the work, you can create a philosophical level where you reflect on things and make your own thoughts.”

Toni Spyra lives and work in Linz, Austria.
