Trinh Tuan is a Vietnamese figurative lacquer painter, born in Hanoi in 1961.
He completed his BA at the Hanoi Industrial College of Fine Art in 1985, and his MA at Hanoi Institute of Fine Art in 2000. Composition of his works often consist of a single figure or a couple of lovers depicted in his paintings, unleashing emotions and bringing feelings of loneliness, sadness, or happiness and love. Trinh Tuan’s paintings contain a single or two images, rich in details in and around the subjects. He uses mixed medium and color to build three-dimensional projection, adding intensity and texture to his work. In order to achieve his desired self-expression, he uses materials such as silver and gold leaf, and eggshell.
Trinh Tuan’s pictures are impressionistic in their sensibility and romantic in their allusive complexities. He has embellished life scenes with subtly imposed movements coupled with a technique implemented with astute and cognitive control that have become his hallmark as a master lacquer painter. The interplay between light and dark, shadow and luminescence has lent a wraith-like quality to his subjects. However, in spite of the dreaminess of his compositions, his subjects do not lose their authenticity and in fact – take on an earthiness that reflects the maturity that Tuan wishes to emphasis. Tuan possesses an ability to tell a story about love, loneliness, betrayal and mysterious emotions that every person can relate to, through the depicted characters and their golden aura that shines beneath them, symbolizing warmth, hope and peace.
Tuan has exhibited abroad several times, in countries such as Japan, China, Germany, Singapore, Denmark, France, Argentina, Laos, Australia, the United States, Thailand, Israel, Netherlands, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Italy, Malaysia, United Kingdom, Korea and India. His paintings are, amongst others, in the collection of HRH the Crown Prince of Norway and the collection of the National Art Gallery of Malaysia.
Now a professor of the medium lacquer on wood at the Hanoi University of Fine Arts, he lives and paints in Hanoi, capital of Vietnam.
