Ulrike Lienbacher’s drawings

Ulrike Lienbacher is the most famous for her drawings in which she deals with her main theme, that of the human body. She considers the body as the carrier of both an individual and a socio-cultural story.
Lienbacher draws young women in a different poses and gestures such as intimate routines—washing themselves, combing or drying their hair—or in their underwear. Through sparing use of color, the artist accentuates particular details of the body including fingers, soles of feet, or strands of hair. Sometimes naked and girlish, sometimes fragmented, the woman’s body is often fragmented with avoided eye-contact. Even when the figures are portrayed with their heads, they are looking away from our gaze, creating the effect of an erotic interplay of absence and presence.

Ulrike Lienbacher’s video Toilette

Lienbacher trains her critical view on the discourse pertaining to hygiene and health, how we relate to filth and cleanliness, and the cult of fitness and wellness. In her drawings she reiterates the process of dirtying and cleaning, the figures rub and dry themselves, they wipe, scrub and towel the paper surface of the drawing as a substitute for the body.

“The way a society deals with the body is an indicator of its values. The discourse on hygiene and health; the relationship with untidiness and cleanliness; the cult of fitness and the wellness craze that have exploded with the growth of the European tourism industry; these are all reference points that I find very interesting in this context.” – Ulrike Lienbacher

Her video, called Toilette, 2002, shows an animated drawing of hands washing and wiping a torso and playing with its chest hair. Lienbacher evoked not only the ideal body but also its real-life – personal hygiene, as well as cleanliness as a compulsion.

Großer Kunstpreis des Landes Salzburg
