Wang Gongxin is a Chinese artist, whose conceptual videos explore the boundary between reality and its replicas by turning seemingly ordinary situations upside down, and inverting viewers’ expectations.

Born in Beijing in 1960, he belonged to the first generation of art students after the Cultural Revolution and trained as an oil painter in the Socialist-Realist style. He got his BA at the Capital Normal University, China in 1982. In 1987 he was selected for a visiting scholarship program at the State University of New York during which time he encountered the video and multimedia work of important artists including Bill Viola, Nam June Paik and Bruce Nauman. The experience was profound and upon returning to Beijing in the mid-1990s, he shifted his focus to video art.

Wang’s experience of New York opened his eyes to the expanding possibilities and parameters of the era’s burgeoning contemporary art scene. After the strict controls he was used to in the field of painting, video art offered a freedom he couldn’t resist. Wang returned to Beijing in 1994 and set up an open studio in their home, creating one of China’s formative venues for video art. He became one of the driving forces in the avant-garde movement, turning his home, and later a corner of a relative’s restaurant, into a gallery where fellow artists could meet and show their work.

‘Video art gives me a chance to express my personal understanding and thoughts about this modern life’, as the artist himself states. The pioneering video works of Wang Gongxin heralded the rise of the video art movement in China, and he remains a force in Chinese contemporary art today.

Gongxin has exhibited extensively including international exhibitions at the Asia Society and Museum New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Mori Art Museum Tokyo, the Victoria and Albert Museum London, the Musée D’Art Contemporain de Lyon, the International Center for Photography New York, the Shanghai Art Museum, and the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing.

Gongxin currently lives and works between Beijing and New York.
