Xie Qi is a Chinese painter and sculptor, whose works lie somewhere between the concrete and the abstract – humans and objects are prolonged, drawn out, magnified and change shape, lending a sense of mannerism.

Xie Qi was born in 1974 in Chongqing, China. She graduated from the Central Academy of Art and Design in 1998.

The system of signification forces everyone into its stereotypes, into unified cognition and imagination, while individualized and specialized sensitivity wither away. Xie Qi attempts to remove established meanings by making her own rules and renaming the objects, and return symbols to their original freedom of signification. Her subjects are confusing and defocused when seen from afar, then distinct and delicate, when viewed at close range.

In her series of oil paintings on canvas the artist implicitly reworks the notion of money in China, by amplifying and embellishing details gleaned from Chinese Renminbi notes. The physical specificity of her subject painting recasts the currency notes with an aura of allure and mysterious aesthetic appeal. Multi-colored and richly layered, tinted and superimposed, images in the paintings are both familiar and strange. Landscapes and figures on banknotes appear only indistinctly.

Xie Qi’s artworks were featured in several group and solo exhibitions in her native China, but also in Sweden, Italy, Germany and the US. Her first solo show was held in Art Scene Gallery, Hong Kong, in 2001.
Xie Qi is a full time artist, living and working in Beijing.
