Chen Wen Hsi was one of Singapore's pioneer artists, known for his avant-garde paintings. The artist was born in Baigong in Guangdong province in 1906, and had his early education at Chen Li Primary School and St. Joseph Middle School.

Chen Wen Hsi was skillful in both traditional Chinese ink and Western oil painting, and experimented with a variety of styles ranging from Fauvism to Cubism.
