Derrick Velasquez is an American artist best known for large-scale sculptures and installations but also works in photography, collage, and other media. His work is “an attempt to construct a language of structure that questions our physical and psychological interactions with industrially manufactured materials that exist in the spaces (both large and small) we inhabit.” Using an investigative process, he projects varying forces like gravity or tension on Masonite, plywood, two-by-fours, hardwoods, marine vinyl, acrylic, and the human body, hoping to tease out both their obvious and less apparent qualities. The artist received his BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his MFA from Ohio State University. Born in Lodi, California, Derrick Velasquez currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado.
