A Bulgarian artist, Iva Gueorguieva is known for abstract paintings and sculptures that investigate notions of space, illusion and movement. Drawing on the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, the artist’s paintings are composed of intricate arrangements of painted paper and fabric collaged on the canvas.
Born in 1974 in Sofia, Gueorguieva currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2000. Her work has been exhibited worldwide, including venues such David Lewis Gallery, NY, UTA Artist Space, LA, Susanne Vielmetter, Los Angeles, LA Louver, Los Angeles, Sophia Contemporary, London, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena and Galerie Lelong, New York. Her work is held in public collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA and Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA.
Gueorguieva's paintings are imbued with a feverish energy and dynamism, examining the fine line between the intrinsic illusion of the painting’s plane and the physicality of its surface. On the other hand, her intricate sculptural assemblages combine simple elements such as metal scraps, fabric and stone.
