Lipp is a German contemporary artist whose works combine heavy-duty,
inexpensive materials with refined, delicate construction. These materials,
such as plywood and OSB, are usually associated with construction.
Simultaneously, the artist takes a delicate approach that reflects the natural
fragility of the subjects he cuts into the material. Born in Cologne, his family
moved to a tiny village in the middle of a forest, where he lived until
graduating from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Lipp started as a sculptor,
working with different materials, where the process of combining the materials
fascinated him. After his degree, he started developing wooded reliefs because
they provided the possibility to create a composition, tell a story, and work
with different materials in a sculptural way. His current practice equally
includes both disciplines, so he considers himself both a painter and sculptor.
Mevlana Lipp lives and works in Düsseldorf.
