Even though he uses painting, video, sculpture, and installation, Rico Gatson is an American artist who prefers not to be defined by any single medium, rather thinking of himself as an object maker inspired by Conceptualism and Performance Art. Known for confrontational and politically opinionated artworks, he often bases them on significant moments in black history. Gatson studied at Bethel College, St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating in 1989, and Yale School of Art, New Haven Connecticut, graduating in 1991.
