Born and raised in London, Sarah Longworth-West is a British contemporary artist interested in the interplay of representation and abstraction. In her work, figures are present through their absence, and it is this ambiguity and implication of figure or form which often gives momentum to the paintings’ construction. The ideas surrounding ruins and the ruinous seem attractive to the artist, and she pursues this line of inquiry through painting, playing with boundaries of recognizable forms and spaces while clearly referencing painting’s art history. She studied at Winchester School of Art Foundation, the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where she earned her BA in Fine Art in 2006, and at Slade School of Fine Art, where she completed her MFA in Painting in 2008. Sarah Longworth-West lives and works in London.
