Susan Vecsey

Abstract Art

July 17, 2013

Working in the traditions of Color Field and Tonalist painting, the American painter Susan Vecsey creates abstractions that are rooted in perception. Minimal and captivating, her works feature abstract swatches of color evocative of shapes found in nature, reminding the viewer of an ethereal place, memory, or dream.

Born in Somerville, New Jersey, Susan Vecsey currently lives and works in both New York City and East Hampton, New York. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College, Columbia University, and her Master of Fine Arts from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, studying under Graham Nickson. In 2012, Vecsey was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome.

Interested in creating lyrical and poetic themes, Vecsey uses representational imagery from nature as a starting point. Exploring ideas about arrangement, lyrical color, perspective, repetition and surface, she creates compositions that appear seamless and fluid. She begins with charcoal studies to draw the ideas of perspective, continuing onto elaborate color studies. She then pours paint directly onto a primed linen or paper, allowing it to flow naturally with some of her guidance.
