Born in raised in Nairobi, Thandiwe Muriu is a Kenyan artist who uses the photographic medium to tell the story of "her Africa". She first picked up a camera at the age of fourteen and has been passionate about it ever since. Slowly refining her practice during her teenage years, she decided to pursue higher education in business school, working simultaneously with Mutua Matheka or Emmanuel Jambo. After graduation, Muriu dedicated herself to fashion photography, emphasizing her compositions on the beauty of black femininity. Recently, she’s been inspired by everyday African objects, even more focusing on her African heritage, using the rich colors and vibrancy for which the continent is so well known.
