Yoriyas, whose real name is Yoriyas Yassine Alaoui, is a Moroccan photographer and performer artist based in Casablanca. He started playing chess at the age of five, which led to him falling in love with mathematics. By the age of 16, Hip Hop culture set him on a course of becoming a break-dancer. However, a knee injury in 2013 halted his dance career, sparkling instead a new artistic transformation in which photography was used for self-expression. Yoriyas’ one-of-a-kind methods of experimentation through photography are inspired by the combination of his Arab-North-African heritage, the strategy of chess, and his love for dance. His work is often an intuitively-based observation of urban and public space, documenting daily life and ongoing changes in Morocco and Africa.
