Tanabe (sometimes written as Yoichi Tanabe) is a Japanese painter whose diverse themes are understood when it is
known that he was born in a city linked to the sea and surrounded by nature.
Besides his interest in flora and fauna, the artist is also fascinated by
industrial interiors and buildings under construction. In his predominantly oil
paintings, Tanabe applies vigorous brushstrokes typical of traditional Japanese
calligraphy. Though mostly within figuration, some of his recent works approach
abstraction without losing the suggestions to forms. Born in Kumamoto on the
island of Kyushu, he has been living in Spain since 1989.
