ca. 1986; Keith Haring was an American artist and activist known for his iconic paintings and street art. He began to attract widespread attention with his spontaneous subway drawings after moving to New York City in the late 1970s. His later work often addressed political and social issues, especially homosexuality and AIDS. Kenny Scharf is an artist best known for his street-art aesthetic and cartoon-like graffiti paintings. Scharf's art career took off in the East Village art scene of 1980s Manhattan alongside such contemporaries as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.
