In an exhibition catalogue essay, Australian art critic Ashley Crawford wrote, “White has brought together a body of work that reveals a passion for colour, form and movement… The results are not unlike slices of the world uncovered by an archaeologist. He seems to absorb and then exhale the weight of the earth…”

This untitled work (as well as “Untitled II”, “Untitled VII”, “Untitled VIII” and “Untitled IX”) formed the basis of an exhibition, “Figure and Ground”, shown in Sydney in 2008. They were made on The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship. The scholarship took the artist to New York and, whilst he was there, he was concentrating on perceptual figure studies at the Marathon programme at New Yorks Studio school. In the night time however, these abstract compositions started to take form. There is a nod to Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossof in this work and although abstract there also exists a debt to the perceived world.
