In an exhibition catalogue essay, Australian art critic Ashley Crawford wrote, “White has brought together a body of work that reveals a passion for colour, form and movement… The results are not unlike slices of the world uncovered by an archaeologist. He seems to absorb and then exhale the weight of the earth…”
This work is part of a series of work produced by the artist between October 2010 and the start of 2011 at the Leipzig Art Programme.
A contemporary interpretation of a historical position through the processes of painting from an outsider's perspective, or more accurately a displacement, was the primary motivating force behind the Leipzig body of works.
These paintings address the duality of nationalism as opposed to the contemporary conditions of displacement and reflect upon its contribution to the artist’s image making process. This includes ideas about migration, nationalism, fundamentalism, globalisation and historical influences on the commercialised production of the visual art world.
During this winter period at the Spinnerei, Leipzig, a connection was made between the artist’s work and the city’s rich culture, especially the history of the printed image, as well as with the history of social realist painting.
