Christo and Jeanne-Claude's site-specific installation in Central Park was completed on February 12, 2005 and lasted 16 days. 7,503 fabric paneled gates were spaced on 23 miles (37 kilometers) of walkways in Central Park, creating a golden pathway. The Gates allude to the tradition of Japanese torii gates, traditionally constructed at the entrance to Shinto shrines.
