Hachiro Kanno's abstract painting endeavours to express the concept of 'Permanescence'. A neologism made up of the words: 'permanence' and 'essence'; it designates each individual's unchanging characteristic of that lasts in time and space. Faced with the un-representability of his concept, Hachiro Kanno draws from traditional Japanese calligraphy the motif that embodies 'Permanescence'. Despite an apparent absence of form, the brightly colored lines - either red, grey, blue or black, are drawn with a unique gesture. Delicate and vigorous, this gesture is typical of the artist's work, modest whilst keeping its' essential message.
