LES PAUL, at his home, Mahway, New Jersey, July 15, 2000 Les was one of the most important figures in American music, not just as a musician, but as an inventor and original thinker. He began in country music as Rhubarb Red but fell into jazz and pop by 1940. He electrified his guitar about the same time and then there was no turning back. He developed the solid body electric guitar that is still the gold standard in 2016. He invented overdubbing and built the first eight track tape recorder. Along the way he released hundreds of records many of which charted and went to number one, won Grammy awards, was in every music hall of fame imaginable, performed with every important pop and jazz musician of the last seventy years, from Bing Crosby to Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney and performed until he was 94, a month or so before he died. He was my friend from the mid-1970s and these pictures were taken in his remodeled studio at his home in New Jersey
