The Estate of Ida Kohlmeyer is represented by Berry Campbell Represented in important museum collections across the country, Ida Kohlmeyer had a remarkable Abstract Expressionist pedigree that superseded her renown in her native New Orleans. Kohlmeyer trained under Hans Hofmann in Provincetown starting in 1956, a period which became an awakening for the artist, and she soon adopted an Abstract Expressionist vocabulary of gestural marks and surface tensions in the manner of her teacher. In the mid-1960s, Kohlmeyer developed a style strongly influenced by the art of her friend and mentor, Mark Rothko. By the late 1960s, she developed a new mode in which organic forms are contained within geometric frameworks. In an April 3, 2020 review of Berry Campbell's exhibition of this period, Roberta Smith commented: "These paintings stunningly sum up a moment when Minimalism was giving way to or being complicated by something more emotionally challenging and implicitly feminine and feminist. They could hang in any museum." Kohlmeyer also drew on non-Western art as evidenced by her Clusters of the 1970s, and Synthesis and Mythic Series of the proceeding decades. Kohlmeyer's inventive and colorful sculptures also brought her acclaim. Over the course of her long career, Kohlmeyer sought to channel her innate proclivity toward spontaneity, even exuberance, with her need for a sense of structured containment that was yet not overly confining. She continued to work with zest and devotion until the end of her life.
